Most people in India own a sunscreen. Far fewer get the protection printed on the bottle — because the number on the front is measured under laboratory conditions that almost nobody reproduces at home.

Why SPF alone is only half the label
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it describes one thing: how well a product prevents UVB-induced sunburn. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB radiation under standardised testing; SPF 50 filters about 98%.
That difference is small, and it is not the number most Indian readers should focus on. Sunburn is the least common sun-related complaint in melanin-rich skin. Tanning, uneven tone, dark patches, and worsening melasma are what people actually notice — and those are driven largely by UVA.

Reading the PA rating
PA stands for Protection Grade of UVA, a system developed by the Japanese Cosmetic Industry Association and now widely used across Asia, including India. It is derived from the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) test, which measures how much UVA exposure the skin can take before it begins to darken.
The scale runs:
- PA+ — PPD value of 2 to 4
- PA++ — PPD value of 4 to 8
- PA+++ — PPD value of 8 to 16
- PA++++ — PPD value of 16 and above
One detail worth knowing: PA++++ is a floor, not a precise score. Two products carrying the same four-plus rating are not necessarily equivalent.
For everyday use in Indian conditions, PA+++ is a reasonable minimum. If you commute in open transport, work outdoors, or are already treating pigmentation, PA++++ is the sensible choice.
You may also see a “broad spectrum” claim, which is the American convention, or a UVA-in-a-circle symbol, which is European and indicates UVA protection of at least one-third of the labelled SPF. Both confirm that some UVA protection exists. Neither tells you how much.
What Indian regulation now requires
Sunscreens are regulated in India as cosmetics under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Cosmetics Rules, 2020, overseen by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Every legitimate product carries a manufacturing or import licence number.
In 2025 the Bureau of Indian Standards introduced IS 17494:2025, a standard for in-vivo determination of SPF that adopts the internationally recognised ISO 24444 method. In practical terms, SPF claims on Indian shelves are increasingly required to be backed by testing on human volunteers rather than laboratory plate methods alone.
This matters because SPF numbers were, for years, one of the least verifiable claims in Indian skincare. Two products both labelled SPF 50 could differ substantially in real performance. Checking for an ISO 24444 reference and a valid CDSCO licence number is now a meaningful way to separate a tested product from a marketing number.
How much sunscreen to actually apply
SPF testing applies sunscreen at a density of 2 mg per square centimetre of skin. Almost nobody applies that much. Research consistently finds real-world application at roughly a quarter to half of the tested amount — which means an SPF 50 applied thinly may behave closer to an SPF 15.
Two ways to get close enough:

1. Cleanse
Use a gentle cleanser suited to your skin. In humid weather this matters more, since a layer of overnight oil makes sunscreen slide and pill.
2. Apply your skincare
Serum first if you use one, then moisturiser if your skin needs it. Let each layer settle for a minute or two.
3. Apply sunscreen generously
Dot the product across your forehead, both cheeks, nose, chin, and jawline, then spread outward rather than trying to cover everything from one blob. Continue to the ears, hairline, and neck.
4. Wait about 15 minutes before going out
This gives the film time to set on the skin. Applying sunscreen in an auto on the way to work is better than nothing, but it is not the same as applying it at home.
5. Let it settle before makeup
Rubbing or dragging a foundation brush over freshly applied sunscreen disturbs the film you just built.
Solving the white cast problem
This is the single biggest reason people in India abandon sunscreen, and it is a formulation issue, not a technique issue.
Mineral filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on the skin surface and reflect light. In non-micronised form they leave a visible grey-white film on deeper skin tones. Micronised versions and tinted mineral sunscreens reduce this considerably.
Modern organic filters such as Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, and Uvinul A Plus provide strong, photostable UVA protection with far less cast. These are approved in India and the EU but not by the US FDA, which is why American sunscreen recommendations translate poorly here. An Indian formulation often has better UVA coverage and a better finish than the American product a global article recommends.
For heat and humidity specifically, gel and fluid textures tend to be reapplied more willingly than heavy creams. The best sunscreen is genuinely the one you will put on in the required quantity, twice a day, in July.
Choosing by skin type

That last row is worth expanding. Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are not driven by UV alone — visible light, including from the sun and to a lesser degree screens, contributes as well. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides are the only common category that addresses this, which is why dermatologists often recommend them specifically for melasma rather than for cosmetic coverage.
Reapplication, honestly
The standard guidance is to reapply at least every two hours when you are outdoors, and sooner after swimming, heavy sweating, or towel-drying. Water-resistant is not waterproof.
If you spend the working day indoors, away from windows, a single morning application is usually adequate. Glass blocks most UVB but transmits a substantial share of UVA, so a desk beside a large window or a long commute in a car is a genuine exposure, and reapplication at lunch is reasonable.
Reapplying over makeup is the awkward case. A fresh layer of your regular sunscreen gives the most reliable coverage. Sticks are convenient and easier to control over makeup, though they still need enough passes to build a real layer. Powder and spray formats marketed for reapplication are better than nothing, but should not be assumed to deliver the same protection as a generously applied lotion. Sprays should never be applied directly to the face.
Does sunscreen cause vitamin D deficiency?
This is the objection that stops more Indians from using sunscreen than any other, and it deserves a direct answer.
Vitamin D deficiency in India is genuinely widespread. One widely cited review in Nutrients put prevalence at 70–100% across the general population of the Indian subcontinent, and attributed it substantially to the near-absence of vitamin D fortification in commonly consumed foods, alongside cultural and social practices that limit sun exposure.
But that deficiency long predates widespread sunscreen use, and it exists in populations with very low sunscreen uptake. India receives abundant sunshine year-round and still records among the highest deficiency rates globally, so sunlight availability is clearly not the limiting factor.
The experimental studies that showed sunscreen suppressing vitamin D synthesis applied it at the full 2 mg/cm² testing density under artificial UV. A systematic review published in the British Journal of Dermatology examined experimental studies, field trials, and observational research together, and found little evidence that sunscreen lowers 25(OH)D levels in real-life use — concluding that vitamin D concerns should not override skin cancer prevention advice.
The practical position: use sunscreen properly, and address vitamin D through diet, fortified foods, or supplementation if a blood test shows a deficiency. Deliberate unprotected sun exposure is an inefficient and risky way to raise vitamin D levels, and it is not a substitute for a test and a conversation with your doctor.
Common mistakes worth checking
- Using a pea-sized amount because the product is expensive.
- Buying on SPF alone and ignoring the PA rating entirely.
- Stopping at the jawline.
- Applying it after you are already outside.
- Assuming SPF 50 removes the need to reapply. It does not — a higher SPF does not extend the interval.
- Relying on the SPF in a foundation or BB cream, which is rarely applied thickly enough to reach its labelled value.
- Treating sunscreen as the whole strategy. Shade, a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and UV-blocking sunglasses do real work, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
What to do next
Check the bottle you currently own. If it carries an SPF of 30 or above and a PA rating of at least three plus signs, the product is fine and the problem is likely quantity. Measure out two finger-lengths tomorrow morning and see how different that feels from your usual amount.
If your sunscreen has no PA rating at all, or you have been avoiding it because of white cast, that is a formulation problem worth solving — and Indian-market sunscreens have improved considerably on both counts.
Consistency beats optimisation. A moderate sunscreen applied properly every day outperforms an excellent one used twice a week.
